Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Zhenzi Mt. at Laoheshan to the northwest of the Mishan County. It was named by Liang Qingcu in 1964, and was cited officially by the Compiling Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of Heilongjiang Province (1979).


Lithology and Thickness

Volcaniclastics. Composed of a suite of tuffaceous clastic rocks. Lower part consisting of variegated sandy shale, intercalated with carbonaceous shale, with a thickness of 136-320 m. Upper part consisting of black shale, carbonaceous shale, medium-grained greywacke and tuffaceous siltstone, with a thickness of 171 m. Total of 256.7 m at the Zhenzishan section, 341.7 m at Laoheshan, and 560 m at Xidaweng of Jidong County.

Lower contact

Unconformable contact with the underlying Zhenzishan Fm

Upper contact

Unconformable contact with the overlying Lower Permian Erlongshan Fm

Regional extent

Distributed in the Tatou River, Zhenzi Mt., Laohei Mt. areas of Mishan County, Erlong Mt. of Taiping Trench, and the Lanhuadingzi and other areas of Baoqing County.

Fossils

The lower part of the formation yields abundant plant fossils (phytolites), comprising Neuropteris daheshenensis, Zamiopteris sp., Noeggerathiopsis latifolia, N. derzavinii, N. cf. mediocris, Sphenobaiera sp., Angaropteridium sp. Nephropsis rohmboidea, Noeggerathiopsis brevifolia, Paracalamites, etc.
